The Australasian Orchestra (AO) grandly celebrated it’s 5th Birthday, with the Shostakovich 11 concert beginning with a truly beautiful and subtle rendition of Percy Grainger‘s rarely performed ‘Colonial Song’. Next percussionist virtuoso Brent Miller joined the orchestra to perform Queensland composer Robert Davidson‘s fun yet difficult ‘Above Ground’ Concerto for Percussion & Orchestra, with the percussion solo part requiring no less than 10 percussion instruments, receiving a very warm reception from the audience.
After the interval came Dmitri Shostakovich‘s huge and enthralling Symphony No. 11 (“The Year 1905”), which the orchestra gave an intense, tight and completely and truly ‘full blooded’ performance. This received multiple standing ovations. Following the concert, the performance garnered critical praise from industry professionals.
